2nd Saturday Art Opening & Reception: "Reverence"
Focusing on their Native Wintu Heritage, John Harper’s sculpture exhibit entitled, “Regalia Dance” and Philip Harper’s painting exhibit entitled “Vision Quest” will be displayed in both galleries through April 6th
On Saturday, March 9th the Siskiyou Arts Museum in Dunsmuir will have the opportunity to share a culturally rich exhibit and presentation by artists John and Philip Harper, two brothers whose family background bridges Native American and Western cultures. Join us from 5 –7pm for an exciting joint opening reception entitled “Reverence,” featuring John Harper’s sculpture exhibit entitled, “Regalia Dance” and Philip Harper’s painting exhibit entitled “Vision Quest.” Their artwork will be on display in both of our galleries through Saturday, April 6th.
In his artist statement for this exhibit, John wrote, “The idea for the sculptures I chose to exhibit came to me while watching an old coyote each morning from my dining room window. At first I was amused at his daily routine, but after watching him for a few days I began to feel a sense of awe for this creature. His journey became a daily quest that never faltered … as I explore these sculptures further, I can only hope they are accepted in the way they were intended, with a sense of reverence.”
Philip was inspired to create art at an early age while watching his mother sketch and write poetry. He describes his father as an amazing man and a great storyteller: “His ability to narrate influenced my ability to see and visualize the little known history of Shasta County. They made me want to paint or sketch them because they were so meaningful and awakened my senses of history.” Phil was asked to sit on the Nor-Rel-Muk Wintu Council during the fall of 2000 and continued until 2018. During this time period he was inspired to paint the culture he was discovering and learning to honor.
Phil’s “Vision Quest” Series of paintings that will be on display at SAM was started in 2011 and has grown to 9 large pieces over a 7-year period; completed in December of 2018.
